Reading

We use an eclectic approach to teach reading that draws upon the Wilson Fundations and Orton Gillingham approach. Our method incorporates instruction in:

  • Phonemic awareness

  • Phonics

  • Decoding strategies

  • High frequency word study

  • Sight words

  • Reading fluency

  • Vocabulary

  • Comprehension strategies

  • Spelling

Sometimes when I can’t sleep at night, I take a flashlight and a book under my blanket because I (now) love to read!
— Vanessa, 2nd Grade student

Pre-Reading Skills:

  • Print awareness (print represents words that have meaning, how to hold a book, reading left to right, front to back)

  • Alphabetic knowledge (the ability to name, distinguish and identify the sounds of the alphabet)

  • Phonological Awareness (sound structure of words taught though nursery rhymes, songs, games)

  • Listening Comprehension

  • Motivation to read

Thanks to Shari, my son will start Kindergarten with much more confidence, since learning how to write and recognize his letters.
— Phil, Dad of Pre-K student
